Disney Yourself: Create a Free Disney Avatar of Yourself

Family Disney has a Disney Yourself section of their website. In it you can create a custom avatar of yourself. You can pick the skin color, eyes, nose, mouth, hair color and style, head accessories, clothes, and the background.

I had a lot of fun making my avatar. It now has Moana and Frozen outfits and backgrounds to choose from.

Visiting Puerto Rico: Historic Fire Station in Ponce

Nestled in the center of the city of Ponce, Puerto Rico sits a very historic building called El Parque de Bombas or Fire Station. It is located behind the Cathedral and next to City Hall. It was established in 1883, when Puerto Rico was still under the rule of the Spanish Crown.

The red and black color are the colors of the city of Ponce.

Inside there are photos of the firemen that worked during the famous fire of 1883, as well as an antique firetruck. Ponce now has a more modern fire station, however, it is this iconic building that you will often see on postcards, posters, other mementos of Ponce and Puerto Rico.

You can often see tourists walk by and stop and look at this very eye catching structure.

TSA Changes ID Requirements for Some States Starting January 2018

As I passed through TSA on a recent trip, I saw this sign. It looks like a Driver's Licence is not enough if you live in Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, or Washington. You will need a second form of ID starting January 22, 2018.

Bitten by the Oldies Bug

For whatever reason, my teen son was interested in getting a Walkman and cassettes. Can you believe that? He said he found it cool. Retro must be cool again somehow or maybe it's because of the new Guardians of the Galaxy movie, who knows.

His quest started by looking for the items at garage sales and he wasn't successful. He then went to Fry's and found that they still sell Walkman. He then went to an old record store and bought several tapes in mostly classic rock.

He then came home with all his findings and asked for help on how to "work it". I was amused at listening to my husband explain to my son how a cassette tape works.

Happiest 5K The Color Run San Jose 2017

I had so much fun at the Color Run. If it would have been just a regular race, it would have not motivated me to participate, but because it was a Color Run, that made it much more interesting and fun.

I was concerned about keeping up with the crowd, but in hindsight there was no need to be worried. Everyone went at their own pace. I jogged as much as I could and walked the rest.

The dance party at the end was fun. Lots of snacks provided by Lays and drinks from Aquafina.

At the end everyone who completed the race got a medal and an extra packet of powdered color in a color that we had not already gone through during the race. That's when kids and families really got covered in powder.

We had baby wipes and old blankets in the car that we had packed ahead of time. We didn't want the car to also be rainbow colored.

The mobile lockers were helpful. The smallest locker was $5, which was big enough for some cell phones, keys, and wallet. People who didn't use the mobile locker carried their belongs with them on the race and that didn't seem to be very fun.

We enjoyed ourselves and will probably need to do it again next year.

Crayon Shapes

This is a guest post provided by education.com , a leader in online resources for teachers, parents, and students.

Looking for a way to reuse those old crayons you've got lying around? Try this fun art activity with your kindergartener to get those artistic juices flowing. This activity will help her improve her early geometry skills of shape and color recognition, and when she's finished, she'll have a brand new fun set of crayons to color with! Now, let's get to transforming those crayons. Then, go ahead and get coloring!

What You Need:
  • Candy molds in your favorite shape (available inexpensively at craft or gourmet stores) or an ice cube tray
  • Assorted crayon bits
  • Your choice: (1) paper cups and a microwave, or (2) a muffin tin and an oven

What You Do:
  1. With your child, peel the paper from your old crayons and separate them by color. Ask your child to say the names of each of the colors. This is great color categorization practice.
  2. Time to melt the crayons! If you are melting them in the microwave, work with your child to put each color into separate cups and heat them in the microwave on low, checking frequently until melted. If you are melting them in the oven, your child can separate the colors into different cups of a muffin tin. Melt these at a low temperature, again checking frequently. Crayola warns that overheated crayons will create fumes, so be attentive and make sure you ventilate your kitchen and crafting space.
  3. When the crayons are melted, pour the hot wax carefully into your molds. If you have melted your crayons in individual cups, you can supervise while your child pours each color into the mold shapes. If your child has the patience, you can let one layer cool within a shape and then add one to two more layers in a different color for multi-colored crayons.
  4. Let the wax cool thoroughly, then pop each shape out. Voila!
  5. Can your child identify each of the shapes of the new crayons? Talk to each other about the new set of crayons, and start coloring!
Throwing a skating, garden or princess party? Find molds in a coordinating shape to make matching crayons, and you’ve got eye-catching party favors made from your child’s scraps!

Picked up my Racers Kit for the Color Run Tomorrow

You could pick up your packet the day of the race, but you had to be there earlier or you go the day before to a designated location, in my case, the Sports Basement and pick it up. I choose to pick it up at the Sports Basement because I needed a few things for the race anyway.

It worked out nicely to pick up my packet and then look for my items at the store because I got a 20% discount at checkout. Sweet! Every penny saved can go to our next trip.

Wondering what's a Color Run? Check out my previous post on registering for the race here

Our New Pet Sparks

Juan surprised me the other day and brought home a new pet. Thankfully it was not a snake. Sorry snake lovers, not my thing.

He named it Sparks. It's a dwarf hamster. You've heard of teacup pets, this one is shot glass size. Super tiny.

I'm happy that Juan now has a pet of his own. We talked about it and he seems determined to care for it. He bought Sparks, cage, food, water bottle and bedding, with his own money. Overall, I'm proud that he took the initiative to take care for a pet of his own.

How to Make Natural Lego Gummies

Who said you can't play with your food? Natural gummies are a good way to have kids eat more fruits. If you have a fruit tree at home and you are wondering what else to do with the fruit, this is a good use for it.

There are so many unhealthy dyes and ingredients in foods these days, that making your own treats ensures that you know what went into them.

Ingredients:
3 envelopes (1/4 onz) unflavored gelatin
2/3 cup of berry puree. I used raspberries.
Honey or desired sweetener
Lego shaped molds or use a traditional gummy bear mold

*For sour gummies, use orange or lemon juice.

Instructions:

  1. Wash the fruit and place it in a blender. I used my Ninja instead.
  2. Using a measuring cup, pour 2/3 cup of the fruit puree into a mixing bowl.
  3. Add 3 envelopes of unflavored gelatin and 2 tablespoons of honey.
  4. Mix all the ingredients.
  5. Microwave the bowl for 30 seconds.
  6. Carefully fill in the mold cavities using the mixture.
  7. Once you have emptied out all the mixture, place the molds in the refrigerator for 20 minutes or until firm.

Storing the leftovers:
Put any remaining gummies in a plastic bag and place them in the refrigerator. This will help preserve them better.

Johnny Depp Surprises Fans at Disneyland

Can you imagine riding the Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland and instead of seeing an anamatronic Johnny Depp, it's the real thing?!!! Well, some lucky guests at Disneyland did get this one of a life opportunity. Wish I was there!

In character, Johnny Depp interacted with the guests as their ship floated by. He would first stay still and pretend to be a robot and then spring into action with his amusing and entertaining persona.

This was all part of a promotion for the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie that comes out on theaters May 26. It's called Dead Men Tell No Tales. I can't wait to see it. I love these movies, they're full of adventure and laughter.

Visit to St. Louis

We stopped by St. Louis for a few days before going to Tulsa for a graduation. Most people know St. Louis for it's Arch, which as we discovered, is the tallest monument in the U.S.

There is a ride to the top. We were told incorrectly by the hotel that you could get the tickets to the top of the arch the same day, and that's not true. You're better off buying the tickets online ahead of time, because they do sell out fast. Click here for the link of where you can get the tickets online.

I'm very claustrophobic and I had a very hard time with the ride to the top. In fact, I was nauseous when I got to the top and was quickly ready to come back down. There's a sample car in the history museum across the street from the monument. If you think you might have a problem with small spaces visit the sample car and make sure that you can go through with it.

Hotel: We stayed at the Hyatt Regency St. Louis Arch and had an Arch View Room. Our room was on a corner of the building, which gave us a great front view of the arch. Concierge called ahead of time and asked us if there was anything they could get ready for us to make our arrival more pleasant. I was quite impressed with the hotel's attentiveness. We stay at many hotels, and have never been treated with this level of customer service.

Games: Since I don't follow baseball, I didn't know that St. Louis is a big baseball town. While we were in town there were two games where the St. Louis Cardinals played the Chicago Cubs. The streets were filled with people in their team colors, mostly red, the local favorite.

Food: We had dinner at Angelo's Taverna. It was delicious. The lasagna you see in the video was my meal from there. Boy, was it yummy. Jim had tortellini. He hesitates to order tortellini because he often only gets 4 of them and it's not filling enough, but that was sure not the case at Angelo's. The portion was more than he could eat.

We also ate at the St. Louis Brewhouse. We requested a table outside, which was literally on the sidewalk. We enjoyed people watching and seeing the touristy horse and buggies go by.

Zoo: We took Lyft over to the Zoo. To my surprise, the St. Louis Zoo admission is free. It's the first zoo I haven't paid admission for. The zoo was very big, with lots of exhibits. There are some paid activities that you can do within the park, but just walking up to see the animals, is free.

I found out from my friendly Lyft driver, that the St. Louis Zoo and other family friendly places have free admission, because it is paid for my the taxes of the residents. There was much more to explore in St. Louis, but we didn't have enough days available on this trip.

A Disney Fan's Ringtone

I recently got a new iPhone 7 in Red, which I'm very excited about. My iPhone 5 had seen better days and was in a dyer need of
 an upgrade.

With my new phone in hand, I now wanted a ringtone an alert tone that showed my Disney Side. I had never bought a ringtone before. I guess I never saw the need for it. I would normally just use one the default ones.

Searching for the right ringtone in the iTunes store was quite easy. They have a section completely dedicated to Disney soundtracks, ringtones, and more. After listening to several of my options, I decided on a Moana song, How Far I'll Go, for my ringtone and a Star Wars alert, R2-D2: Happy

Now whenever I hear my phone ring or I get a text message, it makes me smile. It puts a little bit of Disney in my everyday life.

Do you have a Disney ringtone? What is it?

Free Products to Review from Influenster: Daisy VoxBox

I received these products complimentary from Influenster for testing purposes, but opinions are my own.

My Daisy VoxBox contained a lot of goodies:

  1. SkinnyPop Sea Salt Microwave Popcorn
  2. Yes To Tamatoes Detoxifying Charcoal Paper Mask
  3. Live Clean Coconut Milk Moisturizing Shampoo & Conditioner
  4. Always Infinity
  5. Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt
  6. Nature's Bounty Probiotic Gummies
Reviews:

SkinnyPop Sea Salt Microwave Popcorn-

The container for this popcorn is one of the best I've seen. You use tabs on the sides of the popcorn to pop the container up for microwaving. The container doubles as a popcorn bowl, which keeps you from having to dirty another bowl. I used the tabs to pull the popcorn out of the microwave and not burn my fingers, like I normally do with other popcorn brands. I found the portion was generous, but I wasn't a big fan of the flavor. It seems that in the company's efforts to make this product low on calories, they in turn affected the taste. I found the taste to be dull with very little sea salt. Yes To Tamatoes Detoxifying Charcoal Paper Mask- A black facial mask is a little weird at first. After leaving the mask on and peeling it off, my skin is smooth and feels refreshed.

Live Clean Coconut Milk Moisturizing Shampoo & Conditioner- The smell is really nice. It's not an overpowering coconut smell, just a subtle fragance. The shampoo was good and didn't leave my hair feeling sticky like some brands do. The conditioner was great for my damaged hair. Hair coloring and the blow dryer can leave my hair hard and lifeless. I noticed a change right away with the Live Clean Coconut Milk Conditioner. My hair was silky smooth once again.

Always Infinity- I'm not a pad person. I prefer tampons. This pad was really long and thin. It says that it can hold 10x it's weight. I have heavy periods and I tried on one of the medium flow days and I didn't the length of the pad and I'm not convinced that it holds a lot for it's size. The do come in different strengths, so maybe I tried the wrong one for that day.

Dannon Light & Fit Greek Yogurt- I tried the strawberry cheesecake flavor and I love it! The yogurt wasn't runny or too thick. I love strawberry cheesecake, so I was wondering how much this yogurt would taste like the real thing. You can definitely taste the strawberries first and then a subtle cheesecake flavor. I now include it my lunch bag.

Nature's Bounty Probiotic Gummies- Finally vitamin gummies that are not sour or covered in sugar. The taste is fruity, but not too strong. It is also good for your digestive system, which is a plus.

Day at Xel-Ha Eco Water Park in Cancun, Mexico

Xel-Ha is the only Eco- Water Park that is 100% natural. The price includes all you can eat at various location throughout the park. Unlimited swimming, snorkel rental, and use of inner tubes. There are additional activities like swimming with the dolphins or with the manatees which is at an additional cost.

I did the ictiotherapy, which is the fish spa where the fish eat the dead skin off your feet. I had done it before and enjoyed it. That treatment was $15 for 15 minutes and it was definitely a unique experience. I was told that you can't do it in the U.S. because it hasn't been approved by the FDA. It's one of those things that you want to do when you're in Mexico!

There were lockers free of charge available at a few spots throughout the park. You simply ask the lady at the desk for a key for a locker and she will give it to you. She's also the one to ask for a towel. So, if you're planning on visiting the park you don't need to bring your own towel.

Each section of the park is divided by colors. As you travel down the river you might get confused as to where you started and where your locker might be located. Make sure that when you drop your things off at the locker that you pay attention to what color section you are in.

There are many photo stations throughout the park and some are in some ingenious locations. To activate you use the bar code on your wrist band and after a few seconds, it will snap a photo. You can look at your photos and purchase the ones you want at the end of the day.

The sunscreen has to be biodegradable in order to not harm the ecosystem in the park. The most common sunscreens at Walmart will not be biodegradable, so make sure to read the label before buying it.

Each of the Xcaret parks has a different theme and experience. Xel-Ha is where you want to go with a group of friends or family and hangout in the water and have fun. There are plenty of wood chairs along the river where you can take a nap or rest once you're done playing in the water.

I received complimentary tickets to Xel-Ha. All opinions are my own.

Just Registered for a 5K Color Run

A friend recently told me she was going to participate in a color race. I had never heard of such a thing, so I asked, "what's a color race?"

It's a 5K race where at different points along the race people throw colored powder at you. By the end of the race, the runner is covered from head to toe in colors, like a rainbow.

There's also a foam zone, where you can run through fun foamy clouds.

Children can participate in the race. Kids 5 and under are free to register. Fun way to get the whole family out of the house and get active.

The Color Run is taking place in different cities across the U.S. Check out the Color Run website to find your city and date.

If you live in Northern California, join me on May 27, 2017 for the San Jose, CA Color Run. Sponsored by Lays.

Preparing for runDisney: Choosing The Right Running Shoes

In my efforts to prepare for my upcoming races, I needed a new running shoe. I was surprised at how many options and factors are involved in selecting the best one. I thought all I had to do was buy a shoe that was designed for running in a color and style that I liked, wrong!

Your running style and running type should influence your shoe selection. For example, a trail running shoe is different than a road running shoe. They each support your foot differently for the terrain.

I also never thought to think of the wear pattern on my old shoes. They in turn tell me what my running style is, whether neutral pronation, overpronation, or supination. All terms I had never heard before. REI has a nice article that explains all the options very well. Here's the link

Choosing the wrong running shoe can not only lead to a painful run, but also to injury. It's clear to me now that it's not about the color of the running shoe, style, or logo on it, but instead what my running needs are.

Review of Grand Oasis Cancun

I stayed in room 1418 which is an ocean-view room. The view was gorgeous! Clear blue water, white sand, and sound of the waves hitting the shore.

The balcony was very small. The glass on the railing seemed to be tall and lean inward. If I sat in one of the seats, I felt claustrophobic. The time I spent on the balcony was spent standing and people watching.

The hotel offers a variety of complimentary classes and some were on the beach and viewable from my room.

The bed and room had a turquoise and brown decor. The bed was comfortable and had a variety of pillows to choose from. I'm kind of picky when it comes to pillows, but I was able to find some that met my needs.

The drinks in the mini bar are complimentary. The closet had two sets of robes and slippers. The bathroom had a modern feel. The tub was high up. Being short, I struggled to get in and out of the tub. The tub/shower had a half glass divider, which I've seen in other hotels and I'm not a big fan of. It doesn't keep the heat in. The sink had a variety of toiletries available including a full size shampoo and conditioner and other goodies.

The room cleaning was not consistent. Twice during my stay the maid would not finish the room. She would leave the pillows off the bed, forget to take the used towels, and not replace them with new ones. I called customer service and talked to our assigned room attendant in person. She assured me it wasn't her. She said that one of those days it had been her day off and on the other one she had been assigned to another floor. Luckily, I speak Spanish and was able to get what I needed with some persistence.

The hotel is big with many sections to it. There are grand performances in the lobby that are of the caliber of a Cirque DeSoleil show. You can pay for dinner and show or watch from the top balcony standing up for free.

There's a small casino on property. I didn't visit it, but my friend did. She said you have to load a players card with the money you are going to gamble with. The slot machines were modern and there were some table options.

There are many peacocks running around the grounds. They can be loud at times, but also entertaining.

I found the beach at the hotel to not be a good swimming beach. The waves are really rough along that shore.

There is a pool that is a kilometer long. It has swim up bars and there's often entertainment near the pools.

I saw both wild college kids on Spring break and families with kids at this resort. There a lot of people staying at this resort that come from Canada, Germany, and various countries in Latin America. The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18, so you can imagine how an all inclusive resort like this one would be attractive to Spring breakers.

There were steep bridges that connected one side of the pool to the other and there didn't seem to be another way to get there. If you are handicap or have limited mobility, you want to request a room on the ground floor and closer to the lobby.

Food is all inclusive, however, there are some restaurants that are only for certain room categories based on the color of your bracelet. I think my favorite was breakfast at Tatish. It had a lot of options buffet style or you could have a custom omelet made. No specialty coffees were offered at this restaurant, but I did find a coffee shop that made me a pretty decent hazelnut latte.

My hotel stay was complimentary, but all opinions are my own.

Renting a Smart Car for the Day and Going to Playa del Carmen

The Grand Oasis Cancun has these Smart cars available for rental at the lobby. For $30 US a day you can rent one with basic third party insurance or for $50 US a day you can get full coverage insurance. If you rent it for more than one day than the daily charge goes down. We only had one free day, so we only needed for one day.

I was told it was automatic, however, I have to say, I've never driven a car like this one. It didn't have a park or drive. To start the car, it had to be in neutral. I never use neutral with my car at home. The car also jerked as it shifted through the gears as a manual car would, but it shifted for me. It's obviously a small car and given that I'm a small person, that wasn't a problem. My friend Jenn is quite taller than me, so she felt cramped inside and the jerking of the car made her car sick.

We took the rental and headed over to Playa del Carmen for the day. That's an easy 45 minute ride. There we had lunch, did some walking around, of course some shopping, and a massage.

I had been to Playa del Carmen 3-4 years ago and it has changed tremendously. It went from being this small place to an up and coming modernized hang-out for tourists.

I love getting cheap massages when I'm in Mexico. For $18 each we got a 40 minute massage. That's crazy cheap if you compare that to the $130 or more US price. I thought that the masseuse was very nice and professional. The place had air conditioning, which not all massage places there have, so that was nice.

When you arrive in Playa del Carmen you will see many signs for massages. Notice that the further you walk away from the touristy roads, the cheaper the price will be. The place we went to was off the main touristy road.
