Easter Pudding Cake Cup

I found this kit at Walmart. I don't remember the exact price, but it was something like $5.99. There are instructions for kids and grown-ups, with the intention of parents helping the kids bake these sweet treats. The instructions were easy to follow. The kit came with the batter, food coloring, candy pieces, pudding mix, small cups, piping bags, and decorations.

Kit & I added milk, water, an egg, and butter to the mix.

You make a small batch of chocolate cake that you crumble for the bottom portion of the cup. The top is vanilla pudding with green coloring. You can add some candies to the sides to make it more interesting.

I bought the bunny bag at Michael's. It was $2.99. Easter items were on sale 40% off in store only and there was an online 20% coupon on sale items. I paid $1.79 for it. It's not really big, but it's a good size for small candy and treats.

Prices are subject to change.

Educational App Review: iBiome Ocean

iBiome Ocean is a free iPad game that allows kids to learn about the ocean, the ecosystem, and the effects of global warming.

The game has Professor Bio guide you through the lessons about the ocean. He shows kids the importance of each creature and how it contributes to a healthy ocean and what that means for us.

The map guides you through a series of games that are geared towards learning about different parts of the ocean: coral reef, tide pool, kelp bed, and open sea.
Kids then shake the iPad and use their finger to match items displayed on the Crazy Web. When you get something wrong, it lets you try again, which is nice. It gives you stars on the top based on the speed and accuracy of the response.

*I would use this app as an opening activity, to get kids hooked on the topics of the ocean before digging deeper or as a reinforcer.

Where Do I Put The Soap Pod?

Our washing machine recently died on us. I can't complain. It was with us for at least 10 years. I didn't realize there were so many options out there: front loader, top loader, with agitator, without agitator, with knobs, with electronic buttons. Geesh... We did finally find one that met our needs.

One day I came home to find Juan (my son) and Jim (my husband) both standing in front of the washing machine talking. I walked into the laundry room and asked what was happening. Juan said that he was doing his laundry, but he couldn't figure out where to put the soap on the new fandangled machine. Jim said he didn't know either, but he Googled it. We all had a laugh.

I had bought Tide detergent pods. The new washer has a drawer that pulls out to put liquid and powdered soap. The answer was, just throw it in with the clothes!

I'm liking the Tide Pods. It has 3 things in one pod: detergent, stain remover, and color protection. It's easy to use and powerful.

Ozobot Sticker Codes: Created by an 8 year old

If you have an interest in (STEM) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, you probably have already seen an Ozobot.

An Ozobot is a small electronic robot that responds to colors. You can draw a path and use the colors to tell the robot when to turn right, left, or turn around. It's a STEM toy in that it teaches students to code, while playing.

I recently found out that an 8 year old kid created sticker codes for the Ozobot. They are called Ozoeasy. The pack comes with 216 stickers that can be placed any where along the path that you have drawn. When the Ozobot crosses the sticker, it gives the Ozobot a set of instructions on where to go.

Here's the link to the Ozoeasy Ozobot stickers .

  • If these Ozoeasy stickers were created by a kid, what can we do as educators to empower students to create and invent the next step for the Ozobot? Let's not just limit the students by having them use the robot only as intended, but instead, provide them with the opportunity for innovation.

Getting Kids to Brush Their Teeth

Getting kids to brush their teeth isn't easy. The key is in making in someway fun. Using a special toothbrush or toothpaste often helps, especially if you choose characters that the child is already crazy about. You essentially want to turn something unpleasant and undesirable into something more interesting and fun.

For girls:

1. Belle Oral-B Electric Toothbrush
2. Tangled Oral-B Electric Toothbrush
3. Little Mermaid Oral-B Electric Toothbrush

Make a Disney's Beauty and the Beast: Rose Quilting Square

My husband had his doubts that I could pull this off, but I did!

I started by getting my inspiration piece. Disney's Beauty and the Beast window pane is just beautiful. Once I saw it, I could picture in mind how I could turn it into a quilting square.

I searched for both a coloring page of the window and an already colored image.

I focused on the part that I was going to create, the rose. I cut out that section and increased the size to 120% with the printer.

Using the colored image, I visited JoAnn's where I picked out the fabrics that best matched the colors of the rose, leaves, and stem. I bought a quarter of a yard of each, which was more than what I actually needed. I wanted to have fabric leftover in case I ruined any part of it.

  • 3 different shades of red or pink fabric (quarter of a yard)
  • 3 different shades of green fabric (quarter of a yard)
  • A piece of fabric for the background. I chose a washed blue fabric. The size was approximately 10 x 11 inches.
  • A quarter of a yard of Heat N Bond.
  • A piece of freezer paper.
  • Scissors
  • Iron
  • Rose template

Of course, Nikki had to come investigate what I was working on.

  1. I numbered each part of the rose 1-3, with each number representing one of the fabrics I had picked out. The 1 was the lightest shade and 3 the darkest.
  2. I made an extra copy of the template. Just in case.
  3. I ironed the Heat N Bond to the back of small square pieces of each of the colors that I was going to use.
  4. I slowly started cutting out one of the pieces at a time from the template. I didn't cut it all at once, just the piece I was going to work with.
  5. I place the template piece on top of the fabric square that had the Heat N Bond on the back. There are many other iron on adhesives. Use whichever one you prefer.
  6. I put out the piece following the small template.
  7. I laid out the freezer paper over the image with the glossy side up. I used it to help me figure out where to put the each piece of the rose.
  8. Once I had all the pieces of the rose put together then I cut it out of the freezer paper and put it aside.
  9. Repeat the same process with all the other parts.
  10. Once you have all the pieces made individually, peel off the freezer paper from the back and iron on to the background fabric.
  11. Lastly, you can leave it as is or sew it down. I suggest using invisible thread so you don't have to change threads often.

Funko Mystery Mini Moana Figures

These are so cute!! I loved the movie. If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend it.

A lot of people are starting to buy these and trying to get the whole set. It's a mystery package, so you don't know which one you're going to get. Buying 12 doesn't mean you will get a set. I guess you can always trade the duplicates for the ones you're missing.

I did some price comparing online and Amazon's price was cheaper than other companies.

I'm a big fan of Amazon. I've been a Prime member for years and don't regret it. I like ordering and knowing it will come straight to my door. Plus, I love the selection. Anything I could possibly need, I can from Amazon

Teaching Kids to Use QR Codes is now a Life Skill

You've probably seen a QR code before. It looks like this:
What is a QR code for?
It's essentially a link. You can link a QR to any webpage, image, video or online content.

How do you use it?
You can QR codes with your phone or tablet. It then takes you to the landing page that they have set up for that QR code.

How do you make a QR code?
They're easy to make. I like using Google's URL shortner: . Once you've shortened your link, you will see 3 dots at the end.
Clicking on that will open a menu. One of the options will be QR code. Click on that option and then save the QR code image. You can then print it out our insert it into your text.

Why is it important to show kids to create and use QR codes?
QR codes are now a part of daily life. You will see stores with QR codes that offer a coupon or a giveaway. Sometimes a QR code leads to additional information about a painting or sculpture.

On my recent trip from San Jose, I saw this sign. The QR code in this case gives you real time information on the whereabouts of the bus.

Are you available at 11am on March 24? Go to View character Designer Garrett Taylor and Animator Mike Wu as they live sketch some of the Cars 3 characters!!

The Cars 3 movie comes out June 16, 2017. It will include new characters. It's so exciting! I hope Mater will be in it. He's my favorite.

What are you looking forward to seeing in the new Cars 3 movie? Tell me in the comments below.

Snapchat in the Classroom

Snapchat is a very popular app among teens. It does allows a person to upload an image or video, annotate over it, and add emoji's. "Snaps" the product of a snapchat, does not last more than 24 hours. When you receive a snap that contains something interesting that you want to remember beyond 1 day, you take a screen shot of the image. This in turn saves the image to your phone's camera roll, allowing you to access it later.

Snapchat is available for both iOS and Android devices.

I had not seen anyone attempt to use Snapchat for educational purposes, until now. In the following article, an English teacher shared his experience using Snapchat with his students. After surveying his students use of technology, he concluded that 70% of the students were already using Snapchat. He wanted to tap into this already popular app in order to share resources with his students, encourage them to share their readings, and provide yet another avenue in which to explain the course content.

Have you used Snapchat in your classes? If so, share your story below in the comment section.

STEM Toy Club with Amazon

Amazon has come up with a great new concept, a STEM monthly toy subscription. It's divided into age ranges: 3-4 year olds, 5-7 year olds, and 8-13 years old.

Teachers know the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) in a school's curriculum, but it is great to see a product that parents can use to help children start developing those skills at home. After all, not all kids have an engineer for a parent.

Kits come with a variety of experiments, toys, robots, chemistry sets, and math learning tools.

It looks like you can cancel your subscription at any time, so you can try it once and decide whether or not it's right for you. Amazon seems to be receptive to feedback, so if you have suggestions, they want to hear them.

Have you tried it? What did you think? Let me know.

Educational App Review: Shadow Puppet EDU

What does it do?
It allows the student to easily create videos. In these videos, the student can explain a concept, tell a story, explain the results of an experiment, etc.

On what device does it work?
Available for iPhone and iPad.

What class subjects could use it?
All subjects! It's so versatile and user friendly. A student can read a book out loud in a foreign language, explain a Math problem, explain the results of a Science experiment, etc.

What grade levels is it appropriate for? It says designed for ages 6-8, but I think it has potential for every grade level, K-12.

Disney Find at Target:T-shirts and Socks

Interestingly, I would normally not think of finding women's t-shirts in the men's section. I guess they're unisex.

Target had these t-shirts for $12.99. Not surprisingly, anything Belle related was almost sold out.

I checked online and you can get them at and if you use discount code MENS20, you get a 20% discount. With the discount it would make it $10.39 and with a Target Red Card 5% discount, it would be $9.87.

Disney Beauty and the Beast Belle socks were $9.99 at the store. They are knee high so that you can see her full dress. It has a little tulle over the dress to give it a 3D effect.

I also started using ShopKick again. I had given up on them a few years ago when their rewards weren't very good, but now that they have Target and Starbucks gift cards, I'm in again.

If you don't know what ShopKick is, it's a free app that gives you kicks or points just for entering certain stores. You get additional kicks when you scan certain in store products and purchase those items. You then trade your kicks (points) for free gift cards. Click here to give it a try.

I got 25 kicks just for walking into Target. They also have weekly promotions. The week of March 27 ShopKick is giving away to one person 4 tickets to either Disney World or Disneyland.
